Carihi School Re-Opening Dec. 2 Details & Fire Recovery Update

General News
Carihi Secondary Fire Recovery Update for November 28, 2024

Dear Carihi students & families,

Here are the details you need for the re-opening of Carihi Secondary on Monday, December 2. Students will return to Carihi for the usual start time of 8:45 a.m.

SATELLITE LOCATIONS

As shared in our last update, the former Oyster River school will be the main satellite location while B-wing is being repaired. Our hope is that this will be only for three weeks until the Winter Break, but repairs to B-wing might take up to two months.

For those that don’t know where Oyster River school is located the address is 2250 Terrain Road.

Some classes will also be held in extra space at École des Deux Mondes Elementary and gym classes will be held at Robron Centre – more information on these locations will be shared below.

Transportation Between Carihi and Oyster River:

Students will be transported between Carihi Secondary and Oyster River by school bus. Families living near Oyster River have the option to drop their child(ren) off at Oyster River if they have morning classes there, rather than driving into town to Carihi. The bus ride is approximately 20 minutes between Carihi and Oyster River.

See the Daily Block Schedule section below for the transportation times between Carihi and Oyster River. Students must be on time for the bus between Carihi and Oyster River.

Expectations for Behaviour on the School Bus:

The school bus is an extension of our school and the school’s code of conduct applies to the school bus as well. Students are expected to listen to and respect the bus driver the same way they do their teacher or school principal.

Students are expected to follow these basic behaviour guidelines while on the school bus:

  • Do not vandalize or damage the bus.
  • Stay seated throughout the trip.
  • Keep personal items stored safely at one’s feet.
  • Remove all personal garbage when getting off the bus.
  • No vaping or smoking on the bus.
  • Respect the driver’s space and do not distract them.
  • Keep windows closed, unless allowed by the driver.
  • Do not put heads, arms, or other body parts out of bus windows.
  • Do not throw things out of bus windows.
  • No fighting or yelling on the bus.
  • Students can listen to music using headphones only. Portable speakers are not allowed as they are a distraction to the driver and contribute to conflict between students.

Given that students will be transported during the lunch break on the school bus, they will be allowed to eat and drink on the bus, however, they are not to litter and must take all their garbage with them when they get off the bus.

The bus has cameras, and we will follow up on any concerning behaviour.

Lunches/Meal Access at Oyster River:

Students will need to pack a lunch on days when they have class at Oyster River as students will not be allowed to cross the highway to go to Forbidden Pizza or Discovery Foods for safety and given the limited break time and scheduled transportation times back to Carihi. There will be some food available at the school should a student forget to pack a lunch or need meal support.

Educational Assistant Support at Oyster River:

Students that have educational assistant support will continue to have EA support for their classes at Oyster River.

Why Was Oyster River Chosen as the Main Satellite Location:

There have been some questions as to why Oyster River was chosen as the main satellite location instead of portables on the school grounds, Robron Centre, Discovery Passage, or shared use of Timberline Secondary. School administration and district leadership thoroughly investigated all possible options before landing on Oyster River.

The school district doesn’t have a supply of portables and to purchase them, have them delivered and set-up with heat and electricity would have taken upwards to three months. We also tried to get construction trailers but couldn’t get any large enough.

Robron Centre houses our district’s alternate programs and much of the building is leased by outside tenants. We couldn’t displace these students, staff or tenants. Similarly, shared use of Timberline Secondary would have meant disrupting another school community and would have meant students attending in shifts, with classes extending into the evening.

Discovery Passage is being used for district storage. It would have taken at least a month to get the school cleared out and ready for school use.

Oyster River, because it has been recently leased was the most ready, allowing us to get students back to in-person learning in the quickest amount of time.

ÉCOLE DES DEUX MONDES (EDM)

Mdme. Betus’ French 9 and the SD93 French Immersion classes will be moving to classroom 1 at École des Deux Mondes (EDM). As these classes are located in A-wing they will be at École des Deux Mondes likely for the rest of this school year. Students will walk between Carihi and EDM to attend classes and, like Oyster River, if students have morning classes at EDM they can be dropped off at EDM instead of coming to Carihi first.

ROBRON CENTRE

Robron Centre has generously opened their gym to our PE classes. Students will be transported between Carihi and Robron and will enter using the side entrance beside the gym. There are washrooms and changerooms within the Robron gym wing, and students will not be interacting between schools. PE teachers will be using the Robron gym, weight room, and the community fields for the continued delivery of PE programming. PE classes will run out of Robron until further notice.

Again, if students have morning class at Robron they can be dropped off at the side entrance by the gym instead of coming to Carihi first. Keep heading straight up the laneway when you turn into the Robron parking lot, and the gym entrance will be on the left by the parking spaces.

DAILY BLOCK SCHEDULE

To minimize lost instructional time in each class we are going to a simplified Day 1 and Day 2 rotation and double block schedule. Day 1 will have blocks A and C and will be on Mondays and Wednesdays; Day 2 will have blocks B and D and will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fridays will alternate between Day 1 and Day 2, with Friday December 6 being Day 1.

The school day’s start and dismissal times will stay the same so that there is no change to the morning and afternoon school bus schedule.

CLASSROOM CHANGES AT CARIHI

To accommodate the resource needs of certain classes, we have also had to move some classes at Carihi. As of Monday, December 2 the following classes will be in these new locations:

Mr. Cassidy’s Summit class will be combined with the other Summit class in C111.
Mr. Telford’s Careers class will be in room E110.
Mr. Eichelberger’s Entrepreneurship and Careers classes will be in room F140.
Ms. Dunsmore’s Workplace Math 10 will be in room E107.
Mr. Shields’ Guitar class will be in room F140.
Forestry will be in room F119.

Culinary Arts will be in room E129 for this week. We are still trying to find another appropriate kitchen space in the community to serve as a teaching kitchen. More information will be shared with students in this class as soon as possible.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR THOSE WITH LOCKERS IN A-WING & B-WING

The school will be providing school supplies (binders, paper, pens, pencils) for those students whose lockers were in A-wing and B-wing. These supplies will be available at both Carihi and Oyster River.

Given the contaminants from a building fire, the remediation company must recover and inventory items from the fire-affected areas. The remediation company also decides whether items are safe to be returned; it must be shared that fabric and other porous items are not allowed to be returned.

More information will be shared by the school district very soon regarding insurance coverage for personal items.

EXTRACURRICULAR & OUT-OF-TIMETABLE COURSES

We continue to work hard to ensure that extracurricular activities and out-of-timetable courses can continue. Below are some updates:

CHOIR

Choir is going to continue to run out of Bethany Lutheran Church on Tuesday afternoons after school. Mrs. Kingston will share more information soon with choir students.

BAND

We have received good news that instruments in the band room appear to have not been damaged in the fire. However, they must be recovered and assessed by the remediation company, as well as thoroughly decontaminated before they can be safely returned. Given that we don’t have a timeline of when that may happen, we have had to pause our band program until January.

MUSICAL THEATRE

Musical theatre will continue in some fashion. Mrs. Knight will share more information as soon as possible with musical theatre students.

HOCKEY ACADEMY

We have been in contact with hockey academy students and families, and ice time will continue during A block.

IGNITE

The Ignite program will continue their workout program at Club Fitness.

ATHLETICS

Coaches have been in contact with school teams, and we are happy to share that the practices and game will continue. Practices and home games will be held at the École Phoenix Middle School gym and wrestling will continue at Southgate Middle School. Uniforms will be replaced as quickly as possible, but in the meantime, temporary shirts have been made for teams. New practice schedules will be shared by the coaches soon.

We know that change is hard and there is a lot of information in this update. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding. The Carihi staff will help students get where they need to be and will continue to support them in the coming weeks.

We will get through this together, Tyees! See you on Monday.

Deanna Brennan, Vice-Principal
