Applied Design, Skills & Technologies
Students in Grades 10 to 12 will have opportunities to specialize in a specific area or to continue to explore their interests in more than one area. The specialization might be within the disciplines Business Education, Culinary Arts, Home Economics, Information and Communications Technology, Media Arts, Technology Education, or Tourism, across these and other areas, or in emerging disciplines. The specialization might be driven by students' desire for practical skills in a particular area, their interests and passions, or their plans for post-secondary education or careers. This will allow students in Grades 10 to 12, who are becoming increasingly independent, to personalize their learning by pursuing interests that are relevant to them.
Students are also able to access trades programs at North Island College in their Grade 11 or 12 year with some careful course planning in previous years. Any student wishing more information regarding the dual credit programs offered through SD72 and North Island College should see Ms. Camerin for assistance in laying out a career pathway. Grade 10 and 11 students should consider taking the Skills Trades Exploration program as an introduction to the Trades Sampler and the Dual Credit Trades program.
Students can choose from the following Dual Credit Trades programs:
- Aircraft sheet metal manufacturing technician
- Aircraft structures technician
- Automotive service technician
- Carpentry foundation
- Electrical foundation
- Electronics technician core
- Heavy mechanical foundation
- Plumbing and Piping foundation
- Welder foundation
- Trades Sampler - a survey courses featuring a variety of trades. Students will spend all day at North Island College and receive up to 20 credits for the program. This program is offered 2nd semester.
- Prep Chef-this is an introduction to working in a busy commercial kitchen.
Students can also select the Trades Sampler offered 2nd semester of your Grade 11 or 12 year or the Prep Cook program which is an introduction to working in a busy commercial kitchen. This program will offer a wealth of information and training before taking the formal Professional Cook 1 program.
