Youth Work In Trades--this is the former Secondary School Apprenticeship Program
Wondering what to do after you graduate?
Maybe one of British Columbia's is right for you. ITA's Youth Programs give you the chance to try out different trades and get a head start on an apprenticeship while you're still in high school. You could be earning a pay cheque and building your skills—in the classroom and on the job—before you even graduate.
Once you leave high school, ITA will be there to guide you through the rest of the post-secondary education and training you need to earn your trade certification and become a "ticketed" tradesperson. Getting your ticket is the best way to prove your skills and rise to the top of your profession.
Here are some helpful resources to get you started:
- Why sponsor an apprentice?
Get a head start on the work-based training for an apprenticeship program while you're still in high school. As an SSA student, you'll "earn while you learn" and graduate from the SSA program with 16 high-school credits and 480 work-based training hours that count towards your trade credential.
You can apply for an SSA scholarship if you:
- Are registered with ITA as a youth apprentice.
- Have a Grade 12 Dogwood Diploma or Adult Dogwood Diploma.
- Have successfully completed SSA 11A, 11B, 12A and 12B.
- Maintained a C+ average or better in your Grade 12 courses.
- Reported 900+ hours to ITA prior to the December of your 19th birthday.
Changes to the Program
Any student who is under the age of 19 and gets an apprenticeship is now eligible for the scholarship and the additional credits. Please contact Ms. Camerin for the details of the program.
Do you know a journey person who would be willing to work with you as an apprentice? Does your family run a business in an apprenticeable trade? Do you have connections through friends or family that may assist you in finding someone who will apprentice you?
Students wanting to pursue an apprenticeship will need to make their own approach to an employer to see if there is an opportunity to become an apprentice. If you have an employer who is keen to take you as an apprentice please contact Ms. Camerin to assist in the process of apply for the Secondary School Apprenticeship Program and gain high school credits while you learn.
